Slightly further afield than Keswick lies the town of Cockermouth, the birthplace of William Wordsworth. Cockermouth is not as much of a tourist attraction as the town of Keswick and can give visitors a feel for true Lake District living. The Whinlatter Visitor Centre is located about a mile from Cockermouth and is set in a large forest. Visitors can go orienteering, learn about forestry and forest management, mountain biking or just go on a long walk around the forest in the peaceful setting.
