Perhaps you at one time shared some of the misconceptions about denim that I did. It was an itchy scratchy stand-on-its-own starchy fabric. It was for cowboys. It would rub my skin raw like sandpaper and was uncomfortable. All that changed when I gave denim a chance. I am sure you also have a treasured pair of comfy jeans or denim button up shirt. I encourage you to give denim the opportunity to show you how versatile it can be when sewing for dolls.
I recommend 100% cotton denim. Find a piece that is soft, light weight, and flexible, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] yet durable. Before sewing denim, it is important to wash and dry the material to further soften the fabric, but before it goes in the washing machine, be sure to zig zag the edges to prevent fraying.
Remember, as with all doll [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] clothing you sew, to keep your seam allowances at 1/4". An important note about sewing denim is that you want to sew your seams together, as you would with the seam on a t-shirt sleeve, in order to eliminate bulk. Add topstitching with a slightly heavier thread to give a finished [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] look. It also helps to strengthen the seam.
There are many clothing options with denim. Here are just a few different types of outfits you can make when sewing for dolls.
Chores on the farm: Sew work jeans and complement with plaid button up shirts for when Dolly [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] is out working with the horses or gathering eggs. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Country dress: Dolly needs time to relax while on the farm and go out with friends. Create a homey look with dresses, jumpers, and skirts that are casual [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] yet allow Dolly to dress up a bit.
Western flair: At the rodeo, Dolly wears her [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] favorite comfy jeans with a button up denim shirt or vest over a blouse. She could easily be out riding, but is ready to enjoy the day hanging out with friends.
Back home: Dolly's day at the farm may be over, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] but she takes the practical and comfy attire home with her and dresses [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] in overalls, jeans, or a denim jacket when the weather cools off.
Accessories: No outfit is complete without a purse or backpack. Whether hiking for the day or going to the mall, a denim purse is the perfect accent. Embellish denim with beads or leather. A denim wallet is perfect to add to Dolly's handbag. A floppy hat will accent an outfit as well as keep the sun off.
As with any outfit, there are ways to dress up denim. Take a [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] basic jumper and add pockets, and applique on the bodice, or a row of buttons down the front. Transform a basic dress and add lace or ribbon around the raised waist. Create a culotte's skirt that is both comfy and casual. Add leggings and a blouse and denim vest. Flair a basic skirt and add ribbon at the bottom or make it a tiered skirt for more variety.
The options are endless. Once you realize all that denim can offer you won't want to stop at clothes. What about a raggedy quilt? The more often you wash it, the more raggedy the edges and the better it looks. It is perfect for a [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] picnic with friends.
Are you ready to give denim a try? You will be glad you did!
